FMEP Statement on the Sanctioning of Three Prominent Palestinian Human Rights Groups

On September 4, 2025, the Trump Administration imposed sanctions on three prominent Palestinian human rights organizations — Al Haq, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights (Al Mezan), and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR). These sanctions were imposed for the organizations’ work in support of the ICC’s investigation and prosecution of Israeli officials for atrocity crimes committed against Palestinians in the violation of international criminal law.

Consistent with our obligations as a U.S. person pursuant to these sanctions, the Foundation for Middle East Peace (FMEP) has ceased all support for these three organizations, effective September 4, 2025.

FMEP is appalled and devastated by the sanctioning of these organizations on the basis of support for a publicly transparent international legal process, and we strenuously object to the political motivations behind this action. These sanctions are inimical to our mission of securing a just, secure, and peaceful future for Palestinians and Israelis. FMEP remains committed to the self-evident truth that defense of Palestinian lives and rights — including working for justice, accountability, and rule of law — is a central requirement for any such future.

FMEP stands proud of our past support for Al Haq, Al Mezan, and PCHR’s work on behalf of international rule of law, and we hope in the future, sanctions will be lifted. In the meantime, FMEP remains committed to supporting Palestinian civil society to the greatest extent possible, consistent with U.S. law.
