The advance of Palestinian political and economic independence and vitality can not be
found in devising solely technical solutions to border management, however enlightened, or in
attempting to realize past agreements that were not implemented even when the basis for their
relevance to overall policy was far greater. Tinkering with a status quo that has produced
unprecedented misery and instability will not end the crisis. A new paradigm for building
Palestinian economic well-being and political sovereignty is required.
