LETTERS
(TORAH VALUES CAUCUS? NO THANK YOU!) Jewish orgs’ letter to Reps. Bacon and Cuellar: On 1/25, 9 Jewish or organizations sent a letter to Reps, Bacon (R-NE) and Cuellar (D-TX) opposing the establishment of a new “Congressional Caucus for the Advancement of Torah Values.” The letter notes that the establishment of the caucus “raises significant concerns regarding the separation of church and state, which has been one of the keys to the long-term safety and security of the American Jewish community.” It also notes that the caucus’ intention “to [combat] anti-Israel bigotry” reflects a conflation of criticism of Israeli government policy with antisemitism. The letter states: “Along with many in the American Jewish community, we feel it is our duty to speak out against Israeli actions we find troubling. Just as criticizing American policy or actions does not make one anti-American, so too criticizing Israeli policy is neither anti-Israel nor antisemitic. The implication that antisemitism is akin to anti-Israel sentiment traffics in dangerous antisemitic tropes of dual loyalty and is detrimental to the effort to combat true antisemitism.” The letter was signed by ALEPH: Alliance for Jewish Renewal, Ameinu, Americans for Peace Now, J Street, Partners for Progressive Israel, Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association, Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, T’ruah, and The Workers Circle. - Tweet from Levin (D-MI), retweeting APN’s tweet 1/26/22: “As a Jewish member of Congress devoted to pluralism and respect for all faiths and no faith, the ‘Congressional Caucus for the Advancement of Torah Values’ offends me. This whole thing strikes me as too bizarre to be true.” Link to quoted tweet Did they consult with leading Jewish organizations? Where’s the respect for the separation of church and state? Why are two members of any religion trying to establish a theological caucus?”

(SUSPEND US MAINTENANCE OF JETS THAT ARE BOMBING YEMEN) Malinowski et al letter to Biden: On 1/25/22, Reps, Malinowski (D-NJ) led a letter, co-signed by 11 fellow House Democrats, reading (in full): “In the last few days, the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen has further intensified its strikes on civilian targets, including a migrant detention center and telecommunications facilities, killing over 70 and injuring over 100 noncombatants. The aircraft conducting these strikes, which cause untold suffering, undermine U.S. interests, and defy years of American entreaties, are sustained and kept flying under a contract approved by the U.S. government, Please suspend this contract.” Tweets: Khanna (D-CA-17), Malinowski (D-NJ-7) , McGovern (D-MA-2), Cicilline (D-RI-1)
(HOLD EGYPT ACCOUNTABLE ON HUMAN RIGHTS) Meeks et al letter to Blinken: On 1/25/22, Rep. Meeks (D-NY) and 5 House colleagues (all Democrats) sent a letter to SecState Blinken “urging the Administration to stand by important human rights criteria and follow through with its commitment not to release a portion of U.S. assistance if Egypt fails to fully meet requirements outlined by the Administration” (as summarized in Meeks’ press release). (MAKE THE UNHRC STOP PICKING ON ISRAEL!) Gottheimer et al letter to Blinken: On 1/25/22, Rep. Gottheimer (D-NJ) led a letter, cosigned by 41 House colleagues (bipartisan), urging SecState Blinken to “to prioritize reversing the UN Human Rights Council’s (UNHRC)’s discriminatory and unwarranted treatment of Israel. In particular, we urge the U.S. to lead an effort to end the outrageous and unjust permanent Commission of Inquiry (COI) on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which was created by the UNHRC in May 2021.” Also note:
- The text of the letter and its demands resemble those made in a 1/12/22 article published in the Hill by JINSA, attacking the UNHRC and specifically attacking the COI as “precisely the ‘disproportionate focus on Israel’ President Biden claimed he would combat at the U.N.” That article argued that “The Biden administration should use its seat on the UNHRC to defend the legality of Israeli operations. After all, combatting the council’s anti-Israel bias is part of how the administration justified rejoining the flawed body after President Trump withdrew from it,” and went on to call for Congress “to demand that U.S. funding for the commission of inquiry be withheld.”
- The letter also follows an article, published on 1/12/22 by FDD’s Founder/President comparing the UNHRC’s Commission of Inquiry to Hitler’s Final Solution.

(DISSOLVE IRAN TALKS/PURSUE OTHER OPTIONS/GIVE ISRAEL WHATEVER IT WANTS) Perry et al letter to Biden: On 1/24, Rep. Perry (R-PA) led a letter, co-signed by 33 House Republicans, to President Biden — slamming Iran/Obama/the JCPOA, attacking Biden Admin policy vis-a-vis ongoing talks with Iran, and expressing dismay with the Biden Admin’s failure to expedite delivery to Israel of refueling tanker jets [important to Israel in the event it decides to launch military action against Iran]. The letter contains several ask/demands: dissolve talks with iran; engage in “other options” against Iran [recalling Biden’s words to this effect to Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett]; provide signers of the letter “with a credible ‘Plan B’ option given the increasing likelihood that the talks in Vienna stall”; and reiterate “your unmitigated support for the state of Israel, to include the unimpeded provision of material they require to defend themselves.” Also see:

(ATTACKING UN/UNHRC/COMMISSION OF INQUIRY) Perry et al letter to US Amb to the UN: This week, Perry (R-PA) led a letter, co-signed by 42 House Republicans, to US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield regarding the new Commission of Inquiry investigating alleged Israeli violations of Palestinian rights.. The letter states (among other things): “This choreographed farce of an Inquiry will serve only to further erode the credibility and trustworthiness of the United Nations in serving as an even-keeled and impartial arbiter, and will foment only greater levels of distrust and animosity between Israel and the Palestinians. If this Administration insists on lending our credibility to the United Nations Human Rights Council, we insist that you use our Nation’s vote, voice, and influence to finally remove Israel as an UN Human Rights Council agenda item and eliminate this intrinsically counterproductive Inquiry.” Also see:

(PLEASE FIND A WAY TO FUND EXTRA $1 BILLION FOR IRON DOME) Norcross-led members’ letter to House Appropriations leaders: On 1/21/22, Rep, Norcross (D-NJ) led a letter, co-signed by 105 House members (bipartisan) to House Appropriations Committee Chair DeLauro (D-CT) and Ranking Member Granger (R-TX). The letter expresses regret that the continuing resolution (which all GOP members were going to vote against, regardless) didn’t include the extra $1 billion in funding for Israel for Iron Dome (a shot at House Democrats who opposed sneaking the funding into that bill, notwithstanding the fact that the funding was passed less than 48 hrs later on its own), It goes on to express hope that as House appropriations leaders “negotiate with the Senate on FY2022 appropriations, the $1 billion in supplemental funding that the Senate included is maintained” and to request “additional bill language to ensure U.S. co-production is employed to the maximum extent practicable.” Also see:

Israel’s security is essential to America’s national security & essential in the fight against terror.” Linked to Jewish Insider article.
(RE-LIST HOUTHIS AS TERRORISTS) Tenney et al letter to Blinken: On 1/21, Rep. Tenney (R-NY) led a letter, co-signed by 9 Republican colleagues, to SecState Blinken, noting: “The previous Administration’s designations would have further isolated the Houthis, curbed their financing and deterred foreign direct support, and heightened public awareness of its activities. Considering these benefits, we again urge you to re-designate the Houthis as an FTO and SDGT to advance efforts to achieve a sovereign and united Yemen that is both free from Iranian interference and at peace with its neighbors.” Also see: Tenney press release; Tweet.
(SUPPORT EastMed PIPELINE) Bilirakis-Malliotakis to Blinken: On 1/21, Rep. Bilirakis (R-FL) and Malliotakis (R-NY) sent a letter to SecState Blinken “in stark opposition to the Biden Administration’s change of course on the EastMed pipeline project.” The press release accompanying the letter (entitled, “Bilirakis and Malliotakis Push Back On Biden’s Abandonment of Key Allies”) asserts that “By undermining the project, the Administration is undercutting three of our strongest allies in the region: Israel, Greece, and Cyprus, as well as the European Union’s hopes for energy independence and economic prosperity.” Also see

(REVIEW & OVERHAUL US COUNTERTERRORISM POLICY) Warren et al letter to Biden: on 1/20/22, Sen. Warren (D-MA) led a letter, cosigned by 49 colleagues (all Democrats, from both House and Senate). As described in the press release, “the lawmakers call on the President to overhaul U.S. counterterrorism policy to center human rights and the protection of civilians, only using lethal force when it is lawful and as a last resort. This letter comes as more details emerge about the botched August 29th strike in Kabul, Afghanistan which led to 10 civilian deaths including seven children and an aid worker employed by an American NGO, as well as the potentially unlawful 2019 strike in Baghuz, Syria, which the military never independently investigated.” Also see: Calling Civilian Casualties a ‘Failure,’ Democrats Urge Biden to Do Better (New York Times)

Jewish News Syndicate 1/27/22: Legislators of Israel Allies Caucus meet on applying IHRA definition of anti-Semitism [“‘As legislators, we have a responsibility to fight anti-Semitism with all the tools available to us,’ said U.S. Congressional Israel Allies Caucus co-chair Chris Smith (R-N.J.). ‘This means we have to write good legislation, provide funding for programs to fight anti-Semitism, hold hearings, pass resolutions, meet with executive branch officials and work together with parliamentary colleagues in Israel Allies caucuses.’”]
Jewish Insider 1/27/22: Nina Turner’s uphill challenge in Cleveland rematch [“The sun had barely risen on Wednesday morning, but Pinchas Landis, an Orthodox Jewish rabbi from University Heights in suburban Cleveland, was already fielding a cascade of text messages as media reports of a surprise rematch between Nina Turner and freshman Rep. Shontel Brown (D-OH) began circulating among members of his community. Turner’s announcement arrived only five months after Landis had helped unite large segments of Cleveland’s sizable Orthodox community in opposition to the former state senator and progressive stalwart, largely over views she expressed last year during the course of her campaign that many Jewish voters saw as hostile to Israel…Pro-Israel groups that backed Brown last cycle also expressed their continued support for the congresswoman. Mark Mellman, the president of DMFI’s political arm, said Brown ‘has proven to be an effective advocate for Northeast Ohio and for the Democratic agenda.’”]
Jewish Insider 1/26/22: She could be the first Jew of color in Congress [“On Middle East foreign policy matters, Ram Hinsdale largely aligns with J Street’s approach to the region. By way of example, she expressed support for Rep. Andy Levin’s (D-MI) Two-State Solution Act, which, among other things, would bar Israel from using U.S. military assistance to annex the West Bank, while also endorsing legislation sponsored by Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN) that would place additional restrictions on American aid to Israel.”]

Foreign Policy 1/24/22 (by Reps. Jayapal, D-WA, and Lee, D-CA): A U.S. Foreign Policy Fit for the 21st Century [“...Add to this the fact that it is everyday people, not industry executives, who are sent off to wars; that it is working-class communities that bear the consequences when much-needed resources are siphoned into jet packs and planes that don’t fly; that special interest groups such as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and the Saudi lobby wield enormous influence in Washington; that anti-democratic repression, conducted with U.S. backing, can be profitable for multinational corporations; that politicians can buy support by selling fear; and that persistent white supremacy and other forms of oppression lead to the treatment of foreign lives as expendable. U.S. foreign policy is the way it is not because it works for the many but because it works for the few.”]
