Letters
(MORE $$ FOR ISRAEL/IRON DOME) Gottheimer et al letter to SecDef Austin: On 6/2, Rep. Gottheimer (D-NJ) led a letter, cosigned by 56 colleagues (bipartisan), expressing support for “replenishing Israel’s stock of interceptors for the Iron Dome missile defense system and other important matters” and asking him to “continue urgently engaging with Israel on this request, and that you please report to Congress regarding Israel’s needs as soon as possible.” The letter states: “If Israel requests additional assistance, as contemplated in the MOU, please work closely with Congress to expeditiously fulfill this request.” Press release is here; also see articles in the Jewish Insider and The Hill.; also see Tweets of approval from the ADL. (FIGHTING ANTISEMITISM) Deutch-Meng et al letter to Biden: As previewed in last week’s Round-Up (based at that point on a 5/28 Jewish Insider report), on 6/2, Reps. Deutch (D-FL), Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Meng (D-NY), and Smith (R-NJ) led a letter to President Biden, signed by a total of 133 House members (bipartisan), urging him to respond to the rising antisemitism in the United States and around the world. Deutch press release is here. The letter includes: “Jewish Americans are also deeply concerned by the rise in physical and violent antisemitic attacks taking place in communities across the country. In Los Angeles, patrons at a restaurant were identified as Jewish and violently attacked in an apparent attempt to hold them responsible for the conflict between Israel and Hamas. In New York, a protest devolved into individuals shooting fireworks into a crowd of Jews. There have been countless instances of inappropriate Holocaust invocations and deplorable comparisons of Nazi Germany to Jews and the State of Israel and horrific signs and social media posts suggesting Jews should return to the gas chambers where millions perished during the Holocaust. Between May 7 and May 14, more than 17,000 tweets used some variation of the phrase “Hitler was right.” In just the last few weeks, antisemitic incidents, both online and in-person, have increased by 75-80 percent in the United States.”
(RELEASE AID FOR PALESTINIANS) Raskin et al letter to Sen. Risch: As previewed in last week’s Round-Up (based on reporting by the JTA), on 6/2 Rep. Raskin (D-MD) led a letter to Sen. Risch (R-ID), consigned by 143 House colleagues (all Democrats), asking Risch to stop blocking aid to the Palestinians. Van Hollen (D-MD), Kaine (D-VA), Murphy (D-CT), and Merkley (D-OR) led a letter, cosigned by 13 additional senators (12 Democrats and 1 Independent), “regarding the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, and the need to use all diplomatic tools to support a durable end to hostilities in Gaza, Israel, and the West Bank.” The letter states: “We must address this humanitarian emergency while supporting a durable ceasefire and a return to international diplomacy,” and goes on to lay out (in detail) four immediate steps requested of the Biden Administration: Support Emergency Relief, Support Humanitarian Access, Robustly Fund Humanitarian Efforts, and Restore the U.S. Diplomatic Presence on the Ground.
