Israeli police attack Palestinian worshippers praying in the streets outside the Old City of Jerusalem (Al-Quds), as the Al-Aqsa Mosque remains closed by the Israeli authorities, 20 March 2026. The police used tear gas, stun grenades and batons. Today marks the start of the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, and the first morning prayer of Eid al-Fitr holds particular significance for Muslims. Amid heightened restrictions due to the US–Israel war against Iran, this marks the first prolonged closure of the Al-Aqsa compound since 1967, other than during the pandemic.
