Leaders in Israel’s far-right coalition seem to believe in an alternate reality in which Israel is immune from the lessons of history and from international rules of state behavior. For example, they believe that Israel can succeed in its project of conquest and settlement of the post-1967 Palestinian territories and defeat the Palestinians’ quest for a state of their own. But this project is so out of step with modern values of equality, democracy, and human rights that it is doomed to fail.
