The events surrounding the Great March of Return in Gaza and Israel’s response to the protesters, have brought Gaza to the forefront of international news. U.S. foreign policy vis a vis Israel and Palestine has a profound effect on the two million Palestinians, 45% of whom are children 14 years old and younger, who live in the 140-square mile area of Gaza. The enclave has been under a blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt with US support for 10 years, leading to a dire humanitarian crisis and deteriorating security for both Gaza and its neighbors.  Electricity is often available for only a few hours a day; the water and sanitation systems have collapsed leaving raw sewage flowing into the Mediterranean Sea and 96 percent of Gaza water unfit for human consumption. In 2012 the United Nations predicted that by 2020 Gaza would be uninhabitable, but with declines in living conditions over the last several years, some UN officials warn that Gaza may be unlivable even sooner.
