Bibi Bends over Backward to Form Government, LobeLog

Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu has less than 48 hours remaining to put together a coalition government. If Netanyahu fails to come up with a slate of partners by Wednesday at 8 pm, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin will be required by Israel’s Basic Law to task another member of Knesset with doing so. If successful, that coalition builder would replace Bibi as Israel’s Prime Minister.

As of Tuesday morning, Netanyahu had signed a coalition agreement with Shas, an ultra-orthodox religious party. The religious-nationalist Jewish Home party, led by Naftali Bennett and representing parts of Israel’s settler community, appeared to be holding out for the Foreign Ministry, despite an offer from Netanyahu that would give the party control over the Education, Diaspora, Agriculture, and Culture and Sports ministries.

The offer also gave the party control of the Settlement Division, which is responsible for planning and building settlements in the West Bank, as well as a deputy defense minister position that would head the IDF’s civil administration, which runs the Israeli military occupation of the West Bank.

It is unclear how long Bennett will hold out for a better deal, since the collapse of coalition negotiations could pave the way for the left-leaning Labor Party, led by Isaac Herzog, to form a government coalition. But even if Netanyahu manages to get Jewish Home on board, he will preside over a unstable and razor-thin coalition of only 61 seats in the Knesset, out of 120.
