HaMoked: Center for the Defence of the Individual, is an Israeli human rights organization founded in 1988 following the outbreak of the first intifada. The organization, then called the “Hotline for Victims of Violence”, was focused on helping Palestinians injured as a result of the “broken-bones policy.” HaMoked provides legal assistance to Palestinians whose rights are being violated, particularly with respect to residency and building issues in East Jerusalem, and access to land cut off by the Israeli separation barrier and settlements. The process and results of HaMoked’s litigation provide invaluable data on the punitive and coercive legal climate Israel has created that – by design – leaves Palestinians with few options other than to abandon their homes. Using their own legal cases, HaMoked publishes analysis, press releases, reports, and articles highlighting the trends they see in their work, also pushing for policy and statutory changes to improve the human rights situation in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.
