(SANCTION THE HOUTHIS) S. 3532: Introduced 1/20 by Cruz (R-TX) and 8 Republican cosponsors, “A bill to require the imposition of sanctions with respect to Ansarallah and its officials, agents, or affiliates for acts of international terrorism.”  Referred to the Committee on Foreign Relations. This follows a related effort by Cruz in November 2021, when he tried to attach legislation along the same lines as amendment to the FY22 NDAA (covered in the 11/19/21 edition of the Round-Up). LETTERS

(DE-FUND/SHUT DOWN UNRWA) Gohmert et al letter to Blinken: On 1/20, Rep. Gohmert (R-TX) and 17 fellow House Republicans sent a letter to SecState Blinken objecting to the Biden Administration’s decision to provide $99 million for UNRWA, arguing that “Giving money to UNRWA is an egregious waste of taxpayer money, harms our interests in the region, and endangers key allies.” The letter goes on to attack UNRWA, and to attack the Biden Administration, alleging that: “The decision to restore funding to UNRWA was not based on sound analysis or our national interest, and it further endangers our ally, Israel.” The letter also asserts that based on “all evidence available” [no hint is given as to what this evidence is] the decision to restore UNRWA funding “was made in part due to your resolve to cede American sovereignty to the United Nations” and is part of the administration’s “unreasonable actions to destroy all of President Trump’s foreign policy accomplishments.” The letter closes by urging the Biden Administration to reverse its decision (and thereby re-defund UNRWA), and also to use U.S. influence at the UN to shut UNRWA down completely.
